WATER RESOURCES IN CENTRAL ASIA: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS

Water is an essential component of Kyrgyzstan’s economic, political and social security. More than 90% of the national energy is generated by hydropower plants serving as benefit on both domestic regional levels in many ways. Hence, it is crucial to ensure a high level of attention from relevant stakeholders and draw more attention and focus on its long-term value for national welfare and regional cooperation.
As you know, the UN Water Conference 2023 will be held at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA, on March 22-24, 2023. The company “Open Innovations” – a member of the Green Alliance KG has received official accreditation to participate in the conference and to hold a side event outside the UN headquarters. The Green Alliance KG, with its members, together with UNDP Kyrgyzstan, with the support of the European Union Delegation to the Kyrgyz Republic invites stakeholders to participate at the water dialogue and discussion in this regard. Conference entitled “Water Resources in Central Asia: Challenges and Prospects” will be held in Bishkek on 18 March 2023, before the departure of the official delegation of Kyrgyzstan and representatives of “Green Alliance”, “Open Innovations”, and Green4. , Open Innovations, and Green4 to attend the UN Water Conference at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The UN Water Conference in Bishkek aims to bring together all stakeholders – the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Parliament of the Kyrgyz Republic, and line ministries, international development partners, business representatives, civil sector, youth movements, experts, and academia. The aim of the conference is to discuss water issues in order to achieve SDG 6: Ensure availability and sustainable use of water and sanitation for all, as well as to raise awareness on opportunities and prospects for water through mutually beneficial cooperation and sustainable development in the region. In addition, the conference seeks to elevate the water debate to a level that is unified, comprehensive, inclusive, and based on comprehensive knowledge and practice. The conference seeks to understand how important is the interconnection between the role of government and society in building climate resilience in the face of the growing challenges posed by the greenhouse effect affecting the socio-economic conditions of Kyrgyzstan. Strengthening climate resilience is an integral component of this consideration. By hosting this conference, Green Alliance KG, in partnership with Open Innovations and Green4, with the assistance of UNDP and the support of the European Union Delegation to Kyrgyzstan, aims to provide an open platform for open and fruitful discussion among stakeholders and to pave the way for future cooperation at the national and regional level.
