Media and Civil Activists’ Contest “How can Kyrgyzstan achieve carbon neutrality by 2050?”


UNDP in the Kyrgyz Republic, as part of the “Climate Promise” initiative on the development of the “NDC Implementation Plan and the Long-Term Carbon Neutrality Strategy until 2050” is announcing a contest among media and civic activists:

Carbon Neutrality or zero emissions?

  • carbon dioxide emissions do not exceed the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by oceans and forests
  • reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, which affect temperature rise
  • global average temperature has not exceeded the target by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

How can Kyrgyzstan achieve carbon neutrality by 2050?
The aim of the contest:

· Convey the importance of timely determination of the main directions in the carbon neutrality strategy for Kyrgyzstan;
· Improve understanding and need for low-carbon development of the country among the population;
· Improved understanding of climate change issues in Kyrgyzstan among the general public and decision-makers;
· Increasing the number and effectiveness of journalism on climate change issues, including the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change.


Main nominations:

The contest is held on the following nominations:

 

– the best material in online/print media,

– the best video material,

– the best radio material/podcast.


Terms of participation:

All representatives of the media and civil activists can participate in the contest

 

To participate in the contest, you must provide the following no later than 14:00 on August 31, 2023:

1. Application

2. Published content: a published article (from 1500 words and more) or radio/video material (from 3 minutes and more), published in the media from July 1 to August 31, 2023

***Content should be provided electronically with links to publications in the application form
***All content must have confirmation of the publication (a copy of the newspaper/magazine, a screenshot of the Internet resource, an air help indicating the date and time of the release of the material on the TV/radio – and a link to the resource).
***Audio/video content must be uploaded to file exchanges, from where they can be listened to or downloaded, and the links to them are clearly stated in the application.
Additional opportunities

As part of this contest, a unique opportunity will also be provided to participate in 3 interactive seminars with experts from July 15 to August 25, 2023. These seminars are aimed at familiarizing and increasing the knowledge of the participants on such issues as:

– volumes of greenhouse gas emissions around the world and in Kyrgyzstan by sector;
– experience and green practices of countries in implementing a long-term strategy for carbon neutrality;
– scientific and practical achievements in reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
– a guide on how to write quality climate publications;
– etc.

ON THE PRICE OF MATERIALS:
Compliance with the theme of carbon neutrality

 The topic of the contested material is devoted to the issues of achieving carbon neutrality, they are described in detail, there is a connection with the local context, and all the necessary details are present (definition of what carbon neutrality is and other related concepts and related concepts, description of the processes associated with carbon neutrality, their properties/characteristics, forecasts/dynamics, international/country/regional features)

Using data

The data corresponds to the chosen theme and displays the correct picture. The data really has a history, the findings in the data deserve the attention of the reader

Visualization

Use data visualization if appropriate. The right type of graphics or visualizations has been selected

The ease of perception

All clerical/scientific/technical/professional terms are explained in simple words and clear examples

Balance of viewpoints

Publication/report/podcast displays the viewpoint of all possible stakeholders who are given uniform airtime, location, conditions, attitude, etc.

Using sources of information

The material is based on the views of a wide range of carefully selected sources, which represent both the official positions of the parties involved in the history/situation/conflict related to climate change and its consequences – both in different sectors of the economy, government, and the lives of ordinary people, and the views of ordinary citizens.

The characteristics of the sources are clearly defined and it is clear why they were involved and used to obtain information. It is clear why the names of any anonymous sources are not used in the material. The journalist found atypical sources that give interesting and relevant information

Usefulness and effectiveness of climate change reporting/materials

The report/material is based on the opinions of various people (authorities and experts, authoritative leaders, ordinary people/their experiences) who have put forward a number of proposals on how to promote climate change prevention ideas in communities. It formulates concrete proposals that will enable ordinary people to respond effectively to and address the problems associated with the topic

Lack of alarmism

The material encourages people to consider constructive ways of managing and resolving situations/conflicts by incorporating the views of people/experts/decision makers who can offer alternatives. The material also provides the audience with information on collaborative approaches to climate change-related situations/conflicts

The working languages of the competition are Kyrgyz and Russian

If the competition participates in the material prepared in co-authorship, other authors should be notified about it before the application, and the organizers of the competition are not liable in the event of a copyright dispute.

The works submitted to the competition are not reviewed or returned.

The organizers of the competition reserve the right to use video/audio/photo materials submitted for the competition in order to promote the ideas and thematic directions of the competition.

Copyright for all materials, regardless of the outcome of the competition, will be owned by the UNDP Kyrgyzstan and can be used by them as necessary. The project reserves the right to decide on the nomination of a special nomination for the works.

· Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, which affects the rise in temperature;
