In Kyrgyzstan, 2022 has been declared the Year of Protection of Mountain Ecosystems and Climate Resilience. President of the country Sadyr Japarov signed a corresponding decree.

It was adopted in order to increase climate resilience, preserve natural heritage and celebrate the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.

According to the presidential decree, the Cabinet of Ministers was instructed to develop and approve a roadmap for the Year of Protection of Mountain Ecosystems and Climate Resilience by March 1.

Within its framework, issues of implementing environmental and climate measures and projects in agriculture, energy, industry, as well as projects for the development of forestry, ecotourism, emergency response, holding events at the international level, scientific and practical conferences are considered.

At the initiative of the Kyrgyz Republic, on December 16, 2021, the participants of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution declaring 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.

The issues of promoting a number of other initiatives of the Kyrgyz Republic, voiced by the head of state in his messages at the UN General Assembly in New York and the climate leaders’ summit in Glasgow, are now being worked out.

Recall that in 2019 Kyrgyzstan ratified the Paris Agreement as part of the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The commitments of the Kyrgyz Republic in 2021 were presented in the form of a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which is a plan to combat the effects of climate change and the country’s contribution to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Thus, it committed itself to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in particular, by 2030, the country undertakes to reduce emissions by 15.97 percent of emissions under the “Business as usual” scenario and by 43.62 percent with international support.

In addition, one of the priority areas of the Cabinet of Ministers’ action plan for the implementation of the National Development Program until 2026 is climate resilience and economic development in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
